Primary Colors

This was a practice exercise - kind of like a homework assignment - to see what could be done using only the three primary colors - red, blue, and yellow. The only adjustments made to the photos were brightness and contrast adjustments (applied evenly to the entire image), and minimal cropping.

Primary Colors - Light
Location: Makuhari Messe Convention Center
Camera: Sony Clie NZ90
Date: Oct. 10, 2003

Notes: An exercise in primary colors - blue, red, and yellow. This is a stage light for one of the exhibits at the CEATEC show.

Primary Colors - Paint
Location: Inage Kaigan
Camera: Sony Cybershot DSC-S70
Date: Oct. 12, 2003

Notes: An exercise in primary colors - blue, red, and yellow. No adjustments were made to this image.

Primary Colors - Cars
Location: Inage Kaigan
Camera: Sony Cybershot DSC-S70
Date: Oct. 12, 2003

Notes: An exercise in primary colors - blue, red, and yellow. The brightness and contrast were increased. No cropping change. I came within inches of having my head run over by an old lady on a bicycle who didn't notice me taking the shot.

Primary Colors - Stars
Location: Inage Kaigan
Camera: Sony Cybershot DSC-S70
Date: Oct. 12, 2003

Notes: An exercise in primary colors - blue, red, and yellow. Small 'cookie cutters.' The brightness and contrast were increased considerably.

Comments:

I know this is an old post, but I just found it. I have to admit I was fascinated with the exercise. The limits of creativity are pushed when you force yourself to use a limited color palette in your pictures. I must say that's very clever.

  • Photography Tools

For digital photography, we currently use and highly recommend the Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 digital camera. As a backup, and for those really hard to capture photos that it excels at, we also use a Cybershot DSC-F717 camera.

We use Adobe Photoshop Elements to process, crop, and edit our photos, and also use a few other digital photography applications that we post about from time to time.
