If you're like most people, then every once in a great while you need to take a macro photo or close-up but can't afford the money to buy professional equipment. So, you try to get by with what you have, but end up with an image ruined by really harsh shadows.
Andreas Krautwald had a similar problem, grabbed his 3D cell MagLite, and whipped up a very practical yet affordable solution.

He laid out a simple photo lamp reflector design on grid paper, cut it out, assembled it and lined the interior with reflective adhesive foil, then made a diffuser out of translucent paper. With a little re-enforcement to the mounting between the lamp and the assembly, he had a very practical diffuse light source for his macro photos.
Andreas provides a downloadable pdf file with the pattern he used on his website, so it should be relatively easy to modify to your own purposes. Using a similar approach, you can create other photo lamps matched to a wide range of lighting circumstances.
